Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) – EN590

Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) is the most widely used diesel fuel type in many countries, especially in North America and Europe, where stringent environmental regulations have reduced sulfur content in fuels. ULSD contains a maximum of 15 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur, making it a cleaner-burning fuel compared to older diesel formulations.

The standard EN590 specifies the technical requirements for diesel fuel used in road vehicles across the European Union. EN590 is compatible with modern diesel engines and emission control systems, including diesel particulate filters (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems. It is commonly used in trucks, buses, construction vehicles, and industrial machinery.

In the European Union, older EN590 standards included LSD, but modern formulations are now ULSD.

HSDis commonly specified in ISO 8217 standards, particularly for marine fuel (MDO – Marine Diesel Oil) and off-road diesel.

While HSD is becoming increasingly rare in developed countries, it is still used extensively for large-scale off-road machinery, marine vessels, and mining operations.
